It all happens in mere seconds, but the components below must work in perfect harmony for a successful sale to process.
1. Trigger the Transaction
The transaction officially begins when a customer chooses one of your products and submits credit card information.
2. Open the Gates
Your e-commerce shopping cart captures this credit card data and passes it on to your processor through a secure payment gateway.
3. Ask the Issuer
Your payment processor then asks the customer’s credit card issuer to verify the transaction details.
4. Authorization and Advance
If the transaction is legitimate, the credit card issuer authorizes the request and immediately deducts the sale amount from the customer’s account.
5. Approve the Move
Your payment processor notifies you that the customer’s card issuing bank has confirmed the transaction — you’ve just executed a successful sale.
6. Credit the Account
After a few days, the funds are credited to your bank account — after which the entire transaction is officially complete.
